The Department of Population Medicine (DPM) leads in the creation and dissemination of new knowledge and skills essential to maximizing the health of defined populations within available resources.
DPM resides within the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, an affiliate and appointing department of Harvard Medical School. DPM was formerly the Department of Ambulatory Care and Prevention.
Our core mission is to improve the health of individuals through research and teaching focused on patient populations and the health systems affecting their care.
Areas of Focus include:
• Promoting health through prevention
• Improving the quality and cost effectiveness of medical care
• Understanding and overcoming disparities in care
• Using information technology to improve and protect health
• Using evidence to build sound health policy
• Creating national and global partnerships for health research
• Training the next generation of clinical, research, and health system leaders

Dr. Jason Block receives SGIM Award! -
Dr. Jason Block, MD, received the Milton W. Hamolsky award for outstanding research by a junior faculty member for his talk “Underestimation of Calories at Fast-Food Restaurants” at the National SGIM conference. Dr. Block is an Instructor in DPM with primary research interests in psychosocial and contextual factors associated with weight gain and population-level interventions to induce behavior change and weight loss.
