Evolution: How Emerging Consumer Expectations and Novel Care Models are Catalyzing a U.S. Healthcare Renaissance

Most observers agree that we have reached a critical point in US healthcare.  High costs, experience of care, worsening burdens of illness and access to clinical services have become national problems. At the same time, we are witnessing a different type of healthcare consumer:  this new type of patient is brand agnostic, digitally enabled and thrifty. They are more willing than ever to shop for care. A new healthcare industry is emerging in response to these values.  Across the U.S. healthcare landscape, entrants are creating new models of care that are often successfully competing against established ones. Who are these entrants, and what do they share? What does their success mean to the established healthcare system? What will their legacy be? This lecture will survey these trends and will describe and evaluate new entrants who see the struggling US system as an opportunity to build a business and improve public health.

From Research to Policy: CDRF Practices

China is developing rapidly with the help of policy reforms. Incorporating evidence in the policy making process is key to the success of these reforms. The China Development Research Foundation (CDRF), a think-tank focused on the country's public policy, plays a crucial role in promoting the translation of research to policy. Over the past 20 years, the organization has had success with a series of programs such as launching social experiments to improve child nutrition and education in poverty-stricken areas, conducting research on high-impact economic and social policies, and organizing leading forums and trainings to expand international exchange and dialogue. These efforts have produced significant policy and social impacts. In this talk, Qiu will share CDRF's history of promoting policy change and its major practices.

How the challenges facing UK primary care, are resulting in the evolution of the UK Healthcare System

In 2018 the NHS celebrated its 70th Anniversary. The service mean people can access their General Practitioner locally and enabled the pursuit of innovation and clinical excellence in all areas of healthcare as well as creating a mechanism to address health inequalities. Since 1948 we have seen many advances including the discovery of DNA, the development of in vitro fertilization techniques, the organ donor register, pioneering transplant surgery and the introduction of a universal vaccination program.

Current NHS challenges are related to workload, workforce and funding. The emerging solution for the service is again one with General Practice at the heart through the promotion of collaborative relationships with providers across Health and Social Care – hospitals, local councils, mental health providers, patient groups and voluntary organizations.

What is emerging is a model that allows General Practice to use scale as a mechanism for sustainability, where a multiprofessional workforce and technological advances can enhance person centered care as the NHS, still free at the point of delivery, prepares to delivery high quality services for at least the next 70 years.
