The Role of Health Data Utilities in Supporting Health AI
Dr. Khurshid co-authored a paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine - Artificial Intelligence (NEJM-AI) describing the role that health information exchanges (HIEs) have played in establishing the existing technical infrastructure and governance for collecting, sharing, and reusing health data, mostly for primary use cases (e.g., care coordination) and less so for secondary use cases (e.g., public health, research). This paper highlights the opportunity to modernize HIEs into health data utilities (HDUs) — statewide entities with diverse stakeholder governance structures that support the informatic needs of a variety of users in a state or region.

New Publication on SHIP: Piloting a Standards-Based, Digital Platform Linking SDoH Data into Clinical WorkflowsOur team just published an article in the journal “Applied Clinical Informatics” detailing some of the technical and operational lessons learned during the pilot of the Social and Health Information Platform (SHIP). This article details how our pilot used a combination of CHW and clinician input, PPRL technologies, and HIEs to test an innovative approach to addressing SDoH more effectively across communities.

New article evaluates social determinants of health (SDoH) integration for treating pediatric asthma.
Our research team has published a new journal article, summarizing and evaluating a real-world pilot study that used data standards to integrate social determinants of health (SDoH) information into the clinical workflow for treating pediatric asthma.
