PROBIT II

December 2002-April 2005

Researchers conducted follow-up of 13,889 participants at age 6.5 years, representing 81% of those originally randomized. Data collection included assessments of atopy, cognitive ability, behavior, growth, anthropometry, and blood pressure.

Intention-to-treat analyses showed that the randomized intervention did not reduce adiposity measures, including body mass index, waist or hip circumference, or skinfold thickness, nor did it increase stature or reduce blood pressure at age 6.5 years. Researchers also found no significant differences in obesity measures between children in the intervention and control groups.

Analyses of Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaires completed by mothers and teachers found no treatment effects on emotional symptoms, conduct problems, hyperactivity, peer problems, prosocial behavior, or overall difficulties. However, mothers in the intervention group were more likely to exclusively breastfeed children born after their child enrolled in PROBIT.
