Mahnum Shahzad

Mahnum Shahzad is a PhD student in Health Policy, Economics track, at Harvard University. She graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College in 2015 with a double major in economics and mathematics. As an undergraduate, she worked extensively on projects in the fields of development and public economics as a presidential scholar and a research assistant and augmented that experience by doing field work in her native country, Pakistan.

Welcome to our spotlight series, where we look beyond the CV and discover more about our investigators. Meet Peter James, MHS, ScD, who joined the Department of Population Medicine in 2017. Trained in environmental health and epidemiology, Dr. James has focused his research on estimating the influence of geographic contextual factors, including exposure to nature, the built environment, the food environment, air pollution, light pollution, noise, and socioeconomic factors, on health behaviors and chronic disease.  

Robert H. Ebert Career Development Awards Granted to Three Institute Faculty

The Robert H. Ebert Career Development Award, named for the founder of Harvard Community Health Plan and former Dean of Harvard Medical School, supports the work of Institute faculty who demonstrate exceptional promise in the area of ambulatory care, primary care, or preventive medicine.

These awards provide resources to develop leading-edge programs in teaching and research and to pursue scientific and professional activities consistent with the department’s mission. Congratulations to this year’s awardees:

HIV, Comorbidities, and COVID-19: New study sheds light on the need for comorbidity prevention for those living with HIV

Treatment for HIV, or antiretroviral therapy, consists of the combination of at least three antiretroviral drugs that suppress the virus and stop the progression of HIV. A treatment regimen can be started at any point after diagnosis – though the sooner, the better – and is recommended for all people living with HIV.

A decision scientist, Dr. Wright aims to improve the supply of and demand for efficient health care that can improve the management of pediatric chronic diseases, with a focus on childhood obesity.

Whitney Irie

Whitney Irie, PhD, MSW is a Lecturer, Part-Time in Population Medicine at the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute. Dr. Irie was a full-time Research Fellow and a faculty member in the Department of Population Medicine. She has brought valuable expertise in social network science, dissemination and implementation science, and translational research rooted in her social work and public health training.
